“All is Imagined.” – Clayton An

About

A Little Yellow Man

Gardening, drawing, sketching are recurring themes in my life. Since age 6, I have been passionate about gardening. I was an unusual kid, spending most of my time apart from school in my secret garden in Taipei. I never thought that a simple hobby would turn into my career. Yet it is true that my personal journey is always filled with plantings and gardening. From Taipei to Johannesburg, Johannesburg to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Boston, Boston to New York City, New York City to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Guangzhou, and currently residing in Taipei. This loop spans over 35 years. My personal journey is unusual, complex, and very exciting.

Imagine for a moment that you were constantly in a state of culture shock. Consider how this would impact your identity. I faced those challenges and overcame the obstacles. I found peace through Zen. In 1988, at the age of thirteen, my family immigrated to South Africa, and I embraced my new identity as a South African. As the only Asian in my class at St. John’s College and as a boarder in a Catholic boys’ school, I was bound to encounter many conflicts, both mentally and physically. Art became my sanctuary
